Description

ON-DEMAND WEBINAR PURCHASE

Presented by: Brigitte Belanger and Carly Rimes

The ability to recognize the role of body awareness in functional performance and the resulting compensatory body movements from a loss of body awareness in clients with neurodegenerative diseases allows occupational therapists to better evaluate client needs and create individualized treatment plans that restore normal function or provide adaptive strategies and equipment.

This webinar will introduce a novel approach to restore and optimize function for clients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Many clients with PD report a loss of body awareness during function, which can lead to compensatory movement patterns resulting in poor coordination and exaggerated forced movement. This webinar will present a novel "neuro-rewiring" approach that combines a holistic full body approach to therapy with a focus on evaluation, intervention, education, adaptive techniques, & equipment.  The reasons why traditional “strength, endurance and balance” rehabilitation may not result in improving function or preventing falls, but rather have the opposite effect, will be examined.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize compensatory and abnormal movement patterns and how to correct posture to maximize safety & independence in function.
  2. Apply an evidence-based practice strategy that uses "neuro-rewiring" to restore body awareness necessary for occupational participation.
  3. Understand the relationship between proprioception, body awareness and the role of stress, as well as learn strategies for "self-regulation".
  4. Identify the latest adaptive equipment & complementary medicines available for clients with Parkinson's disease.
