The COVID-19 pandemic impacted millions of individuals, many of which are now considered telework employees who will continue to work remotely for the foreseeable future. As occupational therapists, such an opportunity opens the door to utilize one's knowledge and expertise in ergonomic analysis and intervention.

This webinar will explore the role of occupational therapy in ergonomics and today’s telework workplace environment. Specific topics discussed will include: cardiovascular risks of constant sitting, dangers of excessive screen time on the eyes, ergonomic considerations of neck positioning when using smart phones and texting, wrists positioning and prevention of carpal tunnel syndrome, lower extremity positioning and the importance of performing ankle pumps, dangers of improper laptop positioning, proper sitting posture and ideal workspace design, importance of proper hydration for overall wellness, and strategies to manage one’s stress. Specific ergonomic resources will also be discussed. 

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to: 

  1. Understand the physical implications of telework, including cardiovascular risks of sustained sitting, visual strain due to excessive screen time, postural concerns for neck, wrists and lower extremities.
  2. Introduce specific ergonomic strategies to reduce physical strain and encourage proper sitting and standing postures, as per ideal workspace design.
  3. Introduce specific stress management strategies when working in a telework environment.
