In acute hospital settings, delirium is an extremely common hospital complication (Aung Thein et al., 2020), underscoring the need for occupational therapists to support older adult care and aid cognitive recovery. The hospital environment can intensify delirium symptoms, prompting a shift towards new models of care for early supported discharge, an initiative where occupational therapy can play a central role.
This webinar aims to review the occupational therapy role in managing delirium, particularly in the acute care hospital setting. It will specifically examine findings from the recent study "An occupational therapy delirium pathway reduces hospital re-presentations in older adults with delirium: A before and after observational study" (Harper et al., 2023). This webinar will provide an overview of the pathway facilitating early assessment, intervention, and supported discharge home.
