Presenter:Dr. Mary Forhan
Description: Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases with older adults, persons living with mental illness and persons from First Nations having a higher risk of developing diabetes. Diabetes creates demands on a person’s health and well-being while personal and environmental factors create barriers to participation in the occupations of everyday living. The objectives of this session are to raise awareness about the impact of diabetes on engagement in occupations and to highlight the role of occupational therapy to enable diabetes management and secondary prevention. Strategies to align occupational therapy with the Canadian diabetes strategy will be discussed. This session will be of interest to practitioners and administrators working with patients living with diabetes or those who are at risk for developing diabetes.
