WEB LINK ARCHIVE PURCHASE
Presenter:Dr. Jill Zwicker and Dr. Liisa Holsti
Description: Premature and other critically ill newborns undergo numerous painful procedures as part of their life-saving and ongoing care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In this presentation, we will describe the frequency and neurobiology of pain in high-risk infants and the current practice for pharmacological management of neonatal pain. We will then highlight recent research on the relationship of pain to the developing brain and the association of morphine exposure on cerebellar development. We will conclude with a description of ways in which occupational therapists can optimize development through the accurate assessment and provision of non-pharmacological interventions for pain management.
