Very brief coaching skills for very busy professionals in healthcare

Toronto, Ontario

Friday, December 8, 2017 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)

“I know coaching is good, but I don’t have time for that.” is one of the most common comments I get from the very busy professionals in healthcare. The myth that coaching takes time meets the reality of limited time in the daily clinic schedule, and very busy professionals often hesitate to coach instead of telling. What if it doesn’t need to take longer to be able to coach? In fact, what if it takes shorter to get to the same outcome?

In this one-day experiential workshop, very busy occupational therapists and other health professionals will learn foundational knowledge and skills of evidence-based brief coaching that they can take into their everyday interactions with clients and colleagues. Demonstrations, group discussions, and hands-on practice will be utilized to help participants recognize, challenge and integrate more effective mindset, language, and gestures.

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance electronically following the workshop.

Workshop topics:

  • Foundational skills of solution-focused brief coaching
  • Listening and responding differently with your mindset, language, and gestures
  • Building on positive content (purpose, preference, and progress) in clinical communication

Goals and learning objectives:

After taking part in this workshop, participants will:

  1. Identify positive content and negative content in an ordinary clinical communication to build on.
  2. Apply positive listening, intentional responding and effective questioning techniques to explore what is important and wanted by the client.
  3. Articulate how mindset and assumptions deliberately inform the language used in a brief coaching dialogue.
  4. Examine their own embedded presuppositions in their own opening questions and moment-by-moment responses in a coaching dialogue.
  5. Feel confident using solution-focused brief coaching techniques in their everyday interactions with clients and colleagues.

Target audience:

This workshop is intended for occupational therapist clinicians, students in occupational therapy programs and other health professionals who are seeking a brief and effective coaching approach to enhance the effectiveness of their interventions with children, adolescents, adults or older adults.  For additional information about the evidence on solution-focused brief coaching with your client populations, you may search PubMed.

Please note: Each participant is responsible to ensure they apply the information within the context of their licensure, provincial/territorial legislations, institution regulations, scope of practice, etc.
