Motivational Interviewing: Level 2 (Advanced) Workshop for Health Professionals

This advanced evidence-informed one-day workshop is designed for health professionals who wish to become more confident and further their skills in motivational interviewing, particularly when working with clients who seem highly resistant to change. This advanced workshop will build on the challenges that participants have experienced in implementing the introductory workshop motivational interviewing skills and will help participants become more attuned to picking up on client cues for change. This hands-on workshop includes additional practice and feedback opportunities to support the immediate integration of the new advanced tools within participants’ practice.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the workshop.


Outline of the day


  • Review and reinforcement of concepts of motivational interviewing, co-active coaching and motivational coaching introduced in Level 1

  • Discussion on participants’ experiences and challenges implementing the motivational interviewing techniques into their practice

  • How to become more attuned to picking up on client cues for change

  • Discussion and practice applying Resistance or Process Interviewing skills and techniques

  • Many practice and feedback opportunities

Goals and Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Incorporate a repertoire of advanced motivational skills into your professional toolbox.

  2. Address challenges previously experienced in implementing motivational interviewing skills in their practice.

  3. Pick up client cues for change and use advanced skills in working with client resistance in order to foster meaningful health-related behaviour change.

  4. Feel more confident in using motivational interviewing skills in their practice.

Target Audience:

This workshop is designed for occupational therapists, occupational therapist assistants, physiotherapists, speech-language pathologists, dieticians and other health professionals who work one- on-one with clients, particularly with clients who seem resistant to change. This workshop would also be suitable for second year Master’s students in health professional programs (who have already completed fieldwork placements).

Participants must have completed Motivational Interviewing: Level 1 Workshop or an equivalent introductory motivational interviewing workshop. This workshop is being offered by CAOT in Vancouver on October 28, 2016 and in Toronto on March 31, 2017.


Dr. Jennifer Irwin and Dr. Don Morrow

Dr. Jennifer Irwin and Dr. Don Morrow both are award winning teachers, certified professional coaches trained and accredited with both the Coaches Training Institute and the International Coach Federation, and experienced, competent Motivational Interviewing (MI) workshop facilitators (having conducted approximately 60 workshops in the past 10 years). They are also university professors, widely published authors, and proficient presenters to groups varying from small workshops to very large groups (up to 1200). Dr. Irwin is a health behaviourist and Dr. Morrow holds his PhD in the health sciences and together, they bring over 40 years of combined, professional experience. They co-lead a pioneering MI- related and evidence-based research program that specializes in the application of MI on various health- related outcomes. They have developed a unique intervention approach entitled The Monarch

SystemTM ( which integrates MI with other impactful behavior change practices such as coaching and key elements of behavior change theories/applications.

Cancellation / Refund Policy:

All refund requests must be sent in writing to the CAOT National Office. Requests received prior to the registration deadline will be given a 50% refund. CAOT will not provide a refund after the registration deadline. CAOT reserves the right to cancel or modify the offering.
