Driver Screening – Increasing Occupational Therapy Competency

Calgary, Alberta

Friday, June 2 and Saturday, June 3, 2017 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Mountain Time)

This two-day interactive workshop is intended for occupational therapists who are seeking increased competence and confidence in screening medically at-risk drivers. Participants will gain an understanding of the occupational therapy role and responsibilities, and engage in discussion of the ethical dilemmas in driver screening. Current evidence of standardized screening tools and assessments will be reviewed, as well as the role of non-standardized assessments. Participants will have the opportunity to practice using screening tools, interpreting results and summarizing recommendations through the use of lab time, small group discussion and case studies. Participants will engage in a facilitated discussion and networking on the second afternoon regarding the integration of the knowledge into their setting as well as province-specific questions.

Goals and Learning Objectives:

After taking part in this workshop, participants will:

  1. Understand the role of occupational therapy in driver screening.

  2. Be able to describe the skills required for driving.

  3. Identify screening tools and assessments appropriate to different workplace settings.

  4. Be aware of rehabilitation resources.

  5. Be more confident in using screening tools, interpreting results and summarizing recommendations with medically at-risk drivers.

Target Audience:

Occupational therapists, students in occupational therapy programs and other healthcare professionals who wish to increase their competence and confidence in screening medically at-risk drivers. This workshop is not intended for driver rehabilitation specialists.


Lisa Kristalovich

Lisa Kristalovich is an occupational therapist at GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver, BC. She has over 16 years of experience in driver rehabilitation, including screening, assessment and rehabilitation. Lisa has a Masters of Rehabilitation Science, a Graduate Certificate in Assessing Driver Capability and a Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation (Occupational Therapy). She has presented on driver rehabilitation at numerous conferences and is a frequent guest speaker for physicians and occupational therapists.

Tracy Hansford

Tracy Hansford completed her Occupational Therapy degree at the University of British Columbia in 2000 and has practiced for the last 16 years in Kelowna B.C. She worked as an inpatient therapist at the Kelowna General Hospital Rehabilitation Centre before moving into the Outpatient Neuro Rehab Program in 2003, where the majority of her work has been with clients with acquired brain injury. In 2008 Tracy completed graduate studies though McGill University obtaining a Graduate Certificate in Assessing Driving Capabilities in order to further and improve the driving assessment process in the Outpatient

Neuro Rehab Program, facilitating many of her client’s goal of returning to driving. Tracy’s work is now split between Kelowna General Hospital and private practice. She has presented workshops for colleagues as well as at the Okanagan Conference on Brain Injury.
