Decision-making capacity assessment model

As the life expectancy and chronicity of health conditions affecting Canadians continues to rise, the assessment of autonomous decision-making capacity becomes an issue of increasing importance.  Adults with diseases and disabilities are at particular risk in this regard. A decision-making capacity assessment (DMCA) model was developed, implemented and evaluated. During this webinar, occupational therapists will gain practical information to for use when conducting DMCAs. Case examples will highlight best-practice processes and tools that enable independent practitioners and inter-disciplinary teams to provide DMCAs that maximize client autonomy, offer least restrictive and intrusive solutions, and align with provincial legislation.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will:

     1. Understand caregivers’ support needs and how they change across the care continuum.
     2. Distinguish appropriate triggers for capacity assessment.
     3. Document capacity concerns appropriately, to meet current legislative requirements.
     4. Describe the DMCA Model, including related assessment tools, worksheets and a framework for               implementation of the model.
