Occupation and trauma: Expanding occupational therapy practice

Late workshop registration is available at the regular rate plus $50 administrative fee until April 26, 2018 or until maximum number of registrants is reached (whichever comes first)

This two-day workshop will explore the nature, prevalence, and impacts of trauma, current evidence-based assessment and intervention approaches using a framework based on client readiness, and trauma-informed practice approaches, inclusive of families and support networks. The workshop will use both small and large group learning methods, and participants will have the opportunity to discuss and share their own practice experiences.

Workshop topics:

Day 1

  • Defining trauma: Prevalence, diagnoses, key terms
  • Current trauma interventions and approaches
  • Best practices in assessment and intervention

Day 2

  • Best practices in assessment and intervention
  • Including families and support networks
  • Resilience and post-traumatic growth

Goals and learning objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe trauma-related diagnoses and explain their impact on daily life;
  2. Better understand the exposures of first responders, military personnel and veterans;
  3. Utilize a framework for assessment and intervention approaches related to trauma based on client readiness;
  4. Consider the impact on families and support networks;
  5. Increase their evidence-informed practice and critically consider emerging trends.

Target audience:

This workshop is relevant for occupational therapists who work with (or are interested in working with) adults with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or operational stress injury (OSI) from any source (e.g., military, Veterans, first responders, workplace injury). Students in occupational therapy programs and new graduates are welcome to attend the workshop.

Please note: Each participant is responsible to ensure they apply the information within the context of their licensure, provincial/territorial legislations, institution regulations, scope of practice, etc.

Megan Edgelow, MSc, OT Reg. (Ont.)

Megan Edgelow is a Lecturer in the School of Rehabilitation Therapy at Queen’s University. She has clinical, teaching and research experience in the area of mental health and activity participation. She also has a clinical practice serving Veterans.

Heidi Cramm, PhD, OT Reg. (Ont.)

Heidi Cramm is an Assistant Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Therapy at Queen’s University. She is also Interim Co-Scientific Director for the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) and Associate Director, Fire, for the Canadian Institute for Public Safety Personnel Research and Treatment (CIPSRT). Her program of research focuses on the health of military, Veteran, and public safety personnel families, with a particular interest in trauma.

Please note that for the 2017-2018 workshops, CAOT has reduced the registration fee for all registrants instead of offering a group rate. When available, CAOT offers late registration for workshops at the regular rate plus a $50 administration fee. We will only be able to accommodate if there is sufficient space.

Cancellation/refund policy:

All cancellation/refund requests must be sent to education@caot.ca. Cancellation requests received prior to March 7, 2018 will be given a 50% refund. CAOT will not provide a refund after the registration deadline.

CAOT reserves the right to modify the offering, interrupt Workshops, change the timing of a Workshop, cancel a Workshop or change the location of a Workshop because of insufficient registration, severe weather, power failure, building closures or other special circumstances that are beyond the control of CAOT. If the Workshop is cancelled by CAOT, registrants will receive a full refund of the registration fee. CAOT will not be responsible for other costs or expenses incurred by registrants as a result of any such changes.
