Coping strategies training to promote occupational engagement and recovery

Brampton, ON

Thursday, April 12, 2018 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)

This one-day practical workshop is intended for occupational therapists and students in occupational therapy programs who wish to learn how to use a coping strategies program in their clinical practice and occupational therapy assistants who could implement coping strategies training under the guidance of an occupational therapist. Lecture, experiential components and group discussions will be utilized to assist participants in understanding the Adult Learning Model (Kolb, 1984), the clinical reasoning for selecting a prepared module, and how to facilitate coping strategies modules with clients.

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance electronically following the workshop.

Workshop topics:

  • Foundations of adult education
  • Experience participating in a prepared module
  • Link between educational session and adult education
  • How to select modules for clients
  • Practice facilitating part of a prepared module in small groups

Goals and learning objectives:

After taking part in this workshop, participants will:

  1. Identify and explain the components of the Adult Learning Model (Kolb, 1984).
  2. Explain their clinical reasoning for selecting a prepared module.
  3. Facilitate coping strategies modules with clients.

Target audience:

Occupational therapists who work with adults and older adults (in individual or group settings) and students in occupational therapy programs who wish to work with adults who would benefit from learning coping strategies.  Although the coping strategies groups were developed in the mental health context, the topics have a broad application to adult clients in many settings and fields of practice. OTAs, to whom follow up on some components of the coping strategies may be delegated, would be welcome to attend alongside their supervising therapist.

Please note: Each participant is responsible to ensure they apply the information within the context of their licensure, provincial/territorial legislations, institution regulations, scope of practice, etc.

Areas of practice

Mental health, cognitive, neurological and neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, digestive/metabolic/endocrine, general physical health, vocational rehabilitation, palliative and end-of-life care.
