Integrating cognitive behavioural therapy into your occupational therapy practice: Level 2 (intermediate)

Monday, June 4 to Tuesday, June 5, 2018 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Mountain Time)

This two-day practical workshop is intended for occupational therapists who wish to further their cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) skills and increase their confidence in using CBT in their occupational therapy practice. Self-reflection, lecture, small group discussion and hands-on practice opportunities will be utilized to assist participants in becoming more reflective about their CBT knowledge and skills, as well as developing more advanced CBT knowledge and skills. Audio and/or video presentations will be included to support learning. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss challenges they have encountered in using the basic CBT skills in their occupational therapy practice.

Participants will be expected to complete a short reflective task prior to the workshop, complete a homework exercise the evening of Day 1 and participate in a post-workshop 45-minute group telephone (or videoconference) supervision session.

Day 1

  • Review of the basics of engagement
  • Review of the basics of CBT
  • Transitioning from counselling to psychotherapy in occupational therapy practice
  • CBT psychotherapy the essential components
  • Homework: Short reflective exercise on occupational therapy clinical reasoning and CBT

Day 2

  • CBT psychotherapy in occupational therapy practice
  • Interactive clinical reasoning
  • Case examples
  • Self-reflection on application to individual occupational therapy practice
  • Supervision

Goals and learning objectives:

After taking part in this workshop, participants will: 

  1. Become equipped to address challenges encountered in applying basic CBT skills in their practice.
  2. Increase their confidence in using CBT in their occupational therapy practice.
  3. Be more self-reflective about their CBT knowledge and skills.
  4. Begin the understand supervision and CBT.

Target audience:

This workshop is intended for occupational therapists who have at least completed a 2-day workshop with 12 contact hours of previous training in CBT (which may include the workshop “Integrating cognitive behavioural therapy into your occupational therapy practice: Level 1 (basic)”) and who have experience using CBT skills in their occupational therapy practice.  For additional information about the evidence on CBT with your client populations, you may search PubMed.

Please note: The legislations regulating the use of cognitive behavioural therapy and psychotherapy vary between provincial and territorial jurisdictions. Each participant is responsible to ensure they apply the information within the context of their licensure, provincial/territorial legislations, institution regulations, scope of practice, etc.

Presenter:

Gord Hirano

Gord Hirano is an occupational therapist with over 25 years of clinical experience. He is the Executive Director at the Hamilton Program for Schizophrenia and is an Assistant Professor (Adjunct) in the O.T. program at McMaster University as well as maintaining a private practice in occupational therapy. Gord holds a Masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from Boston University and degrees in Kinesiology and Psychology as well as Occupational Therapy. Gord has obtained the following advanced training in CBT:

  • Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:
    • Core 1 - CBT for Depression and Suicidality
    • Core 2 - CBT for Anxiety
    • Core 3 - CBT for Personality Disorders and Challenging Problems
    • Teaching and Supervising CBT
    • CBT for Schizophrenia    
  • OISE Certificates in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Fundamental and Advanced skill courses
  • Psychotherapy Supervision Training Program, Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists

Gord practices as an occupational therapist and actively does CBT with adult individuals with schizophrenia, anxiety, depression and chronic pain.

Please note that for the 2017-2018 workshops, CAOT has reduced the registration fee for all registrants instead of offering a group rate. When available, CAOT offers late registration for workshops at the regular rate plus a $50 administration fee. We will only be able to accommodate if there is sufficient space.

Cancellation/refund policy:

All refund requests must be sent in writing to the CAOT National Office. Requests received prior to April 18th, 2018 will be given a 50% refund. CAOT will not provide a refund after the registration deadline. CAOT reserves the right to cancel or modify the offering.

CAOT reserves the right to modify the offering, interrupt Workshops, change the timing of a Workshop, cancel a Workshop or change the location of a Workshop because of insufficient registration, severe weather, power failure, building closures or other special circumstances that are beyond the control of CAOT. If the Workshop is cancelled by CAOT, registrants will receive a full refund of the registration fee. CAOT will not be responsible for other costs or expenses incurred by registrants as a result of any such changes.
