Ergonomics for occupational therapists: Conducting upper limb musculoskeletal disorder interventions in the workplace

June 8 and 9, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)


In this two-day interactive and hands-on workshop, participants will learn and apply up-to-date scientific evidence and ergonomic assessment techniques pertaining to the identification, assessment and intervention of upper limb musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace. Participants will practice the steps in conducting an ergonomic assessment in the workplace using a variety of validated tools with videotaped case studies. Participants will identify risk management solutions that focus on preventing further injury in the job, or facilitating return-to-work of an injured worker.


Learning objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the most common causes of upper limb musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace.
  2. Identify risk factors that contribute to upper limb musculoskeletal disorders in the workplaces.
  3. Analyze the extent of risk by utilizing a variety of ergonomic risk assessment tools.
  4. Explain various risk control options for reducing risk of injury.
  5. Conduct an ergonomic assessment for upper limb musculoskeletal disorder prevention or return-to-work.


Workshop topics

Day 1

  • Definition of ergonomics and systems approach
  • Prevalence of upper limb musculoskeletal disorders
  • Risk factors in the workplace for upper limb musculoskeletal disorders
  • Conducting an ergonomics assessment
  • Conducting task analysis
  • Identifying risk factors for further assessment


Day 2

  • Techniques for performing a risk assessment
  • Using risk assessment techniques to evaluate risk
  • Risk management strategies for minimizing upper limb musculoskeletal disorders
  • Organization of work and psychosocial factors


Target audience

This workshop is intended for occupational therapist clinicians who wish to be able to use up-to-date ergonomic techniques pertaining to the identification, assessment and intervention of adults with upper limb musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace. Students in occupational therapy programs are also welcome to attend.


Please note: Each participant is responsible to ensure they apply the information within the context of their licensure, provincial/territorial legislations, institution regulations, scope of practice, etc.

Dr. Judy Village


Dr. Judy Village is a Certified Professional Ergonomist in Canada and the U.S. She has more than 25 years of experience conducting applied research, consulting and providing education in ergonomics with a focus on musculoskeletal disorder prevention. She has a BSc and MSc in Kinesiology from Waterloo and Simon Fraser University, and recently completed a PhD in Industrial Engineering at Ryerson University. The focus of her PhD work was to find ways engineers and ergonomists could work together to design production systems to promote healthy workers. Dr. Village is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Population and Public Health at UBC, teaching a masters level course in ergonomics. She was formerly on the Board of Directors for the Canadian College for the Certification of Professional Ergonomists. Dr. Village was on previous ergonomics-related CSA committees and has over 100 publications and conference proceedings. She is frequently an invited speaker at conferences and workshops across Canada and the US. She has developed professional training programs for UBC, UNBC, U. of California, U. of Washington, the Association of Canadian Ergonomists, the BC Association of Physiotherapists and the Ergonomics Summer Institute at University of California, Berkeley.

Please note that for the 2017-2018 workshops, CAOT has reduced the registration fee for all registrants instead of offering a group rate. When available, CAOT offers late registration for workshops at the regular rate plus a $50 administration fee.  We will only be able to accommodate if there is sufficient space.

Cancellation/refund policy

All cancellation/refund requests must be sent to Cancellation requests received prior to March 21, 2018 will be given a 50% refund. CAOT will not provide a refund after the registration deadline.


CAOT reserves the right to modify the offering, interrupt Workshops, change the timing of a Workshop, cancel a Workshop or change the location of a Workshop because of insufficient registration, severe weather, power failure, building closures or other special circumstances that are beyond the control of CAOT. If the Workshop is cancelled by CAOT, registrants will receive a full refund of the registration fee. CAOT will not be responsible for other costs or expenses incurred by registrants as a result of any such changes.
