Aging in place and Parkinson’s disease: Practical solutions to improve quality of life

Webinar: October 1, 2024 - 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)

Registration by 11:59 a.m. (Eastern Time) on October 1, 2024

Presented by: Carol Chiang

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder and has an annual incidence rate of approximately 1 in 600 people aged 65 years or older (Hirtz et al., 2007; Pringsheim et al., 2014). PD affects around 1 in every 500 Canadians, or over 100,000 people (Parkinson Canada, 2023). This means that approximately 6,600 new cases of PD are diagnosed each year in Canada, or 20 new cases per 100,000 people (UCB Canada Inc., 2017). The average age of diagnosis is 60, but at least 10% of people with PD develop symptoms before age 50 (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2023). It's important for occupational therapists to understand the impact PD has on a person and their care partners because occupational therapists play a crucial role in supporting a high level of independence, quality of life, and occupational participation of individuals with PD. By staying updated on effective interventions, occupational therapists can better address the unique needs and challenges faced by people living with PD.

This webinar will help occupational therapy clinicians understand how Parkinson's disease is different than other neurodegenerative diseases, as well as the importance of the clinical lens in identifying what is most meaningful to the client and problem solve solutions from there. This webinar will discuss what is required to age in place and what considerations should be considered specific to Parkinson's disease. Examples of products and services that can help compensate for decreased function will be explored.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the unique challenges of providing services to a person with Parkinson’s disease.
  2. Identify which Parkinson’s specific, evidence- based interventions can be easily integrated into therapy sessions.
  3. Identify the skills that are required to age in place.
  4. Share examples of products and services can support aging in place as well as decrease care partner burden.
  5. Implement simple, practical solutions in their practice.
