Understanding and mitigating fatigue in an ABI population: An evidence-informed and occupational therapy perspective

Webinar: September 10, 2024 - 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)

Registration by 11:59 a.m. (Eastern Time) on September 10, 2024

Presented by: Melissa Paniccia, PhD, MScOT, OT Reg. (Ont.)

The experience of fatigue is prevalent within the acquired brain injury (ABI) population, with significant impacts on the ability to function day-to-day, return to work, and engage socially (e.g., Ali et al., 2022). Fatigue following brain injury is multifactorial (Ali et al., 2022; Mollayeva et al., 2014), including personal, occupational, and environmental/contextual factors. Fatigue management requires an appreciation for the multifactorial nature of occupational disability to empower the individual to work towards increased energy levels and occupational routines. Occupational therapists can utilize occupational analysis to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the potential drivers of fatigue as well as factors that enable increased energy and functional stamina.

This webinar will conceptualize fatigue in the ABI population from personal, occupational, and environmental/contextual standpoints. An overview of evidence-informed fatigue management strategies and the role of the occupational therapist will be reviewed.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Define fatigue in the context of an ABI population.
  2. Gain a high-level understanding of evidence-informed fatigue management and the role of an occupational therapist.
  3. Understand that not all fatigue is created equal.
