Lighting in low-vision rehabilitation: Sharing recent developments from the Danish low-vision services

Registration by 11:59 a.m. (Eastern Time) on October 22, 2024

Presented by: Turid Borgestrand Øien, Anne Mette Jacobsen and Signe Tornøe Tødten

Improved lighting has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life and reduce disability caused by physical environment for individuals with low vision (Øien, 2022; Øien et al., 2023). Practical examples of assessment and adjusting lighting in a more holistic manner can inspire other occupational therapists working in home assessment and modifications.

In this webinar, an overview of the Danish low vision services "Better light, better living" will be presented, including the lighting assessment and intervention and the results from the pilot study. The research collaboration and its outcomes will be discussed, and an overview of current work will be shared. Danish examples such as the "N-Lited" and "The role of lighting when vision changes" projects will illustrate how to utilize architectural and lighting-design practices to improve quality of life and empower people with low vision and people with changing vision due to age.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe current Danish low vision rehabilitation practices.
  2. Describe examples from home environments and the clinic of a holistic approach to lighting assessments and interventions.
  3. Be more attentive to the role of the lighting in their clients' physical environment.
