Occupational therapists and occupational therapist assistants in every area of practice will encounter clients at risk for suicide. As a result, clinicians and educators need support in providing a comprehensive approach with tools and resources across the spectrum of suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention.
During this webinar, tools and resources appropriate throughout the suicide continuum will be illustrated to support implementation of recommendations from the CAOT role paper: Suicide prevention in occupational therapy (Hewitt et al., 2019). Suicide risk factors and protective factors will be reviewed. Both formal and informal assessments will be considered to determine the level of suicide risk. Interventions appropriate to the level of risk will be explored including coping foundation development, suicide safety planning, restricting access to lethal means, and connecting to supports. Support for the clinician involved in adverse events related to suicide will be emphasized.
