Facilitating inclusion for neurodiverse students: A strength-based approach to sensory regulation within the classroom (June 11, 2024)
Description

Presented by: Dr. Janis Leinfuss, OTD, OTR/L, Erin O'Hara, MS, OTR/L, and Amanda Newchok, MS, OTR/L

Neurodiverse students may have sensory processing differences which impact occupational performance and participation (e.g., Clark et al., 2019; Miller-Kuhaneck & Watling, 2018). The Ready to Learn and Play (RtLP) is an evidence-based and strengths-based approach to empower neurodiverse students and their educators to best meet sensory regulation needs as well as facilitate inclusion and participation in the classroom (Leinfuss & Karnes, 2021). This pioneer approach combines current neuroeducation knowledge with occupational therapy theory using teaching methods that align with how the brain learns.

This webinar will provide an overview of the Ready to Learn and Play (RtLP) framework to support neurodiverse students and the associated research. The impact of sensory regulation differences on occupational performance and participation will be explored. Practical strategies and examples will be shared will participants to facilitate the implementation of RtLP in their practice.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the benefits of Ready to Learn and Play (RtLP) as a therapeutic tool to empower neurodiverse students with sensory regulation needs.
  2. Explain how regulation differences impact the occupational performance and participation of neurodiverse students.
