Maximizing functional cognition for individuals with spinal cord injury

Presenter: Sara Kate Frye

There are over 86,000 Canadians living with a spinal cord injury (SCI) and this is expected to increase to 121,000 by 2030 (Farry & Baxter, 2010). Dealing with the life changing effects of a spinal cord injury may be complicated by cognitive impairments which may be present in more than half of people living with this condition. This webinar will provide an overview of the relationship between spinal cord injuries and cognitive impairments. Participants will learn strategies for maximizing cognitive function for success in a structured rehabilitation program, transitioning home, and lifelong health management.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand how cognitive deficits may adversely impact participation in a traditional SCI rehabilitation program.
  2. Apply therapeutic strategies to maximize cognitive functioning that can be applied by an interdisciplinary team.
  3. Describe environmental modifications to maximize functional performance for individuals with cognitive deficits.
