Family-centered service is an essential part of occupational therapy practice. Working in partnership with families, occupational therapists facilitate capacity-building to enable parents to participate in their child’s occupational therapy services and make informed choices to best support their child. It is imperative that occupational therapists consider the many factors that influence family engagement in services to ensure all families are able to engage in meaningful ways to best support the child.
This webinar will define family engagement and summarize relevant research, frameworks and theories on family engagement in pediatric occupational therapy and rehabilitation. During this webinar, the unique challenges of collaborating with families in services where the family is not typically present (i.e. school-based services) will be discussed. Participants will learn to recognize the various roles in family engagement (e.g. the therapist's role and the family's role), and strategies for improving family engagement in practice will be discussed.
