Occupational Therapist 1, Burnaby Centre for Mental Health & Addiction

Help people with complex mental health illnesses achieve and maintain optimal health.

In this role, you will:

  •  Assess clients’ occupational performance using an evidence-based approach
  •  Plan, implement and evaluate outcome-oriented services
  •  Participate in interdisciplinary research
  •  Contribute to the development, review and promotion of occupational therapy services
  •  Educate and counsel clients/families

Accountabilities

As the successful candidate, you will also:

  •  Plan outcome-oriented occupational therapy services by collaborating with the client, caregivers/family and other health care providers, ensuring occupational performance issues important to the client are addressed
  •  Identify how to promote, develop, maintain and/or restore occupational potential
  •  Engage the client in activities associated with occupational roles and the client’s goals; assess and modify as needed
  •  Lead groups to address clients’ behavior and development needs
  •  Coordinate client care for clients by applying case management principles, carrying out physical and mental health, psychosocial, functional/environmental and safety/risk assessments, identifying problems, addressing issues in collaboration with clients, families and physicians, interdisciplinary team members. Participate or lead inter-agency and/or multidisciplinary team case management
  •  Educate and counsel clients/families regarding clients’ functional and rehabilitation issues in their behavior and development, personal life, education, leisure and work; and guides other caregivers, health service providers, staff and other community agencies
  •  Contribute to the organization and delivery of occupational therapy services
  •  Provide clinical guidance to rehabilitation staff and participate in departmental/program quality improvement initiatives, meetings, research and education
  •  Independently manage a complex caseload
  •  Perform other related duties as assigned


Qualifications

You have:

  •  A baccalaureate in Occupational Therapy
  •  Two (2) years’ recent, related experience working in a psychiatric setting with individuals who have complex mental health and addictions issues or equivalent, including addressing physical rehabilitation/mobility needs of clients
  •  Current full registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia
  •  Eligibility for membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists
  •  Knowledge of the principles of recovery in mental illness, psychosocial rehabilitation methodology and the Mental Health Act as it applies to the rights and obligations of clients and staff
  •  Knowledge of community, social and mental health resources
  •  A demonstrated ability to teach and empower clients to assume control over their health
You can also:

  •  Identify emotional, social, or environmental barriers and intervene to eliminate stigma
  •  Effectively manage conflict and aggressive behaviour and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioural management techniques
  •  Work independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team
  •  Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
