Occupational Therapist - Professional Development Coordinator

The Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists is currently recruiting for the position of Occupational Therapist - Professional Development Coordinator. This is a one-year contract for a full-time position, Mondays to Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Time), starting in summer 2024.

This is a hybrid or remote position.

The Occupational Therapist - Professional Development Coordinator is responsible to coordinate the portfolio of CAOT professional development activities (webinars, workshops, and online courses) to support Canadian occupational therapy professionals in providing evidence-informed services to promote the occupational participation of individuals and collectives. 


Required Qualifications:

  • Entry-level degree in occupational therapy;
  • Awareness of current occupational therapy terminology and trends in Canada, including in the Competencies for Occupational Therapists in Canada (ACOTRO et al., 2021);
  • Exceptional organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Strong verbal communication skills;
  • Vision, creativity, and leadership regarding the development of professional development activities;
  • Current registration with the provincial regulatory organization in the province of practice.
  • Bilingual (English and French)



Recommended Qualifications:

  • Current membership with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT); 
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint);
  • Experience with organization of professional development activities;
  • Experience with promotion of professional development activities, events, or services;
  • Experience with hosting meetings and webinars on Zoom;
  • Experience with Elevate Learning Management System (LMS) and In1touch



Description of Duties and Authority:


Within the established policies, procedures and financial guidelines of the Association, the Occupational Therapist - Professional Development Coordinator supports Canadian occupational therapy professionals in providing evidence-informed services to promote the occupational participation of individuals and collectives through the delivery of high-quality professional development services. The Occupational Therapist -Professional Development Coordinator key responsibility is to coordinate the portfolio of CAOT professional development activities (webinars, workshops, and online courses), including conducting professional development needs analyses, inviting presenters, booking a portfolio of professional development activities, coordinating the promotion, supporting presenters through the review of content, and evaluating the outcomes of the CAOT professional development activities. The Occupational Therapist - Professional Development Coordinator is also the main contact person for CAOT members and non-members who have questions related to the content of the professional development activities or ideas for new procedures/activities. As one of the occupational therapists on the CAOT team, the Occupational Therapist - Professional Development Coordinator also supports other CAOT teams with their occupational therapy knowledge.


Major Areas of Responsibility:

1)    Coordination of professional development activities
2)    Support CAOT as an organization


Coordination of Professional Development Activities

  1. Identify and synthesize current professional development needs of Canadian occupational therapy professionals;
  2. Research and invite presenters for professional development activities;
  3. Plan a portfolio of professional development activities (workshops, online courses, webinars);
  4. Support an annual budget and a budget for each professional development activity, including a forecast of projected sales;
  5. Support the presenters in the production of the presentation materials, such as with copy editing, reference check, terminology suggestions to align with the Competencies for Occupational Therapists in Canada (ACOTRO et al., 2021),;
  6. Coordinate the promotional plan for professional development activities;
  7. Draft content for promotion of professional development activities through all of CAOT’s promotional channels;
  8. Monitor registration for professional development activities and adjust the promotional plan as required;
  9. Moderate some webinars, including facilitating the question-and-answer period;
  10. Moderate some workshops;
  11. Support the evaluation of the outcome of all professional development activities and implement prompt actions when quality of the activity is at risk;
  12. Respond to inquiries from CAOT members and non-members related to the content of professional development activities or ideas for new activities.


Support CAOT as an organization
  1. Contribute to a successful annual conference, including moderating conference sessions;
  2. Review documents as required to ensure respect of current occupational therapy terminology that aligns with the Competencies for Occupational Therapists in Canada (ACOTRO et al., 2021) as well as CAOT quality and ethical standards.
