Our Initiatives

Occupational therapy plays a vital role in enabling the health and well-being of Canadians. CAOT works on various initiatives to advance our vision that all people in Canada will value and have access to occupational therapy. Current initiatives include:

  • Represent occupational therapy on national coalitions and task forces to promote understanding of the role of occupational therapy and to advocate for change in relevant public policy.
  • Promote the role of occupational therapy within the Canadian Forces and Veterans Affairs Canada.
  • Promote the role of occupational therapy within the federal government departments including Corrections Canada, Health Canada, Canada Border services, Citizenship and Immigration, Human Resource Service Development, and Public service unions.
  • Lobby for extended health care coverage of occupational therapy services by insurance companies.
  • Health human resources and work force planning.
  • Internationally Education Occupational Therapist Initiatives.
  • Promote occupational therapy specifically dealing with older drivers, elder abuse, Alzheimer's disease and dementia, obesity and healthy occupations, and chronic disease management.
  • Promote and educate the public on the role of researchers and occupational therapists in driving fitness for older adults including engaging in CarFit events.
