President

Seeking occupational therapist to provide national representation and leadership in professional issues about occupational therapy at the Board of Directors level. The President is the chief elected officer of CAOT and in this role serves as the ambassador for occupational therapy in Canada. The successful candidate will possess initiative, creativity, foresight, very strong communication and interpersonal skills and a keen desire to promote and advance the profession.

Qualifications

To be a director of the Association an individual must be at least 18 years of age. No person who has been declared incapable by a court or who has the status of a bankrupt shall be a director.

To be an eligible candidate for president, you must:

  • Be a member of the Association and have been a member of the Association for the last five (5) years;
  • Have practiced occupational therapy in Canada for a for a minimum of five (5) of the last ten (10) years;  
  • Have demonstrated leadership in occupational therapy work and volunteer roles on a provincial, territorial and national level; and
  • Be a current member in a provincial or territorial professional organization of occupational therapists.

The Governance Committee may make a written request to the Board for the waiver of some qualifications. In its discretion, the Board may grant the waiver of such qualifications.

Competencies

  • Understand the functions and responsibilities of the Board;
  • Develop and lead teamwork to successfully identify and obtain goals;
  • Embrace creativity and innovation to effectively influence change;
  • Communicate effectively with different audiences to project a positive image of occupational therapy and the work of the Association;
  • Demonstrate flexibility to consider all viewpoints and seek consensus;
  • Commit interest, energy and ideas to guide the work of the Association;
  • Think strategically to lead with vision, integrity and ethical behavior;
  • Utilize networks and contacts to promote occupational therapy.

Duties

  • Provide leadership to the Board of Directors and the membership;
  • Provide leadership to the Association and promote the profession in Canada and internationally;
  • Chair the Executive Committee;
  • Be familiar with and comply with the bylaws, governance manual, code of ethics and policies of the association;
  • Represent CAOT and participate in activities in Canada and internationally;
  • Chair all Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting of CAOT, to set policy, determine strategic directions for the Association and monitor compliance with the Board policy and achievement of strategic priorities.

Term of Office

Two years commencing on October 1, 2022. One year prior to taking office, the incoming President shall participate as an invited guest at all Board meetings and activities for the purpose of being mentored by the President then in office.
