Learning Needs Checklist for a Practice in Home Modifications

This checklist will help occupational therapists determine their learning needs in developing their capacity to practice in the home modification field. The knowledge and skill/competency areas have been identified by CAOT members as areas that would support their professional development and their practice in home modifications. This checklist is intended as a self-reflection tool to assist you in developing a professional development plan. The Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) does not regulate the occupational therapy practice in home modifications in Canada and does not prescribe a certain minimum competency level to practice in home modifications.

For each knowledge and skill/competency areas you will be asked to indicate the extent to which you feel your mastery level is at the advanced, intermediate or beginner level. Some occupational therapists prefer to use a numerical correspondence of their number of years of experience to appraise their level. The following is an indicator:

  • Advanced: 6 or more years of experience
  • Intermediate: 3-5 years of experience
  • Beginner: 0-2 years of experience

**As you complete the checklist, you will also select areas you judge should be among your learning need priorities. A report with all of your learning needs will be generated and, from this list, you will be able to develop your professional development plan.
