Driving assessment of clients taking medical marijuana

Register by Monday, January 21, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern time)

Presenter: Nellemarie Hyde

Cannabis has been legal for medical use in Canada since 2001, following which an increasing number of clients report taking it to relieve a variety of symptoms. However, symptom relief and intoxication are not mutually exclusive, and resultantly some clients become “high” when taking cannabis to relieve symptoms.  This webinar will assist occupational therapists conducting driving assessments in determining if a client’s medical conditions or use of cannabis is impairing their driving ability, while observing them behind the wheel. The ethical, professional and legal perspectives of taking clients on road while taking medical cannabis will be explored during this webinar.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will:

  1. Identify the intended and side effects of cannabis as a psychotropic medication.
  2. Understand the role of occupational therapists in determining impairment on road.
  3. Identify the professional standards, ethics and laws within which an OT must practice when assessing clients taking medical marijuana while driving.
