Topic: Parent-Child Interaction Therapy: Evidence Based Treatment for Disruptive Behaviour in Young Children

Description:This presentation will cover the inclusion criteria, methods, research, and intended outcomes of this unique parent coaching intervention. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is considered a "Best Practice" in addressing disruptive behaviour disorders in children, and has been used extensively to correct inappropriate physical discipline practices in parents. With adaptations to tailor to ages 1 to 10, growing evidence for use with children on the Autism Spectrum and with developmental delays, PCIT has broad applications and a high level of treatment effectiveness. Parents and children are treated together, and parents are coached in real time to learn a skill set for life. The best part is: children and parents really enjoy the process of therapy. It is play-based, attachment-focused, and it works.

Presenter: Kate Saunders has 19 years of experience at Westcoast Family Centres as a counsellor and parent educator, specializing in working with children and families. Kate completed her BA in Child Youth Care and her MA in Counselling Psychology, and is a Registered Clinical Counsellor in BC. She works therapeutically with individual adults, with children in play therapy, and with parents and children together to address challenging behaviours. Kate is a certified practitioner and trainer in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, one of the few empirically-valid treatments for disruptive behavior in young children. Kate focusses particularly on supporting healthy attachment and emotional development with all of her clients.
