Register by Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 10:59 a.m. (Eastern Time)

Presenters: Samantha Melle & Kara Eissfeldt

Activity pacing is a common intervention used by Canadian occupational therapists to enable their clients to increase independence in daily activities and work-related tasks. This webinar will focus on the challenges that occupational therapist face when utilizing this intervention with clients living with chronic pain.

This webinar will explore how to define pacing as a tool of practice with clients, elicit client-centred meaning of the value of pacing as an intervention, review how to introduce a client to pacing, and find an appropriate starting point for improving activity tolerance. The presenters will dig deeper into exploring the difference between rest and recovery, common misperceptions about pacing, and how to address them.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe activity pacing as an active pain management strategy in daily activities and work-related tasks.
  2. Outline practical pacing experiments for community-based or program-type clients.
  3. Recognize a client’s self-limiting perceptions and collaborate with them to challenge and re-frame those beliefs.
  4. List ways to engage clients in implementing pacing techniques to increase activity tolerance.
